The Qwick Wick Can-Am Midgets presented by Miller Office Trailers were back in action as part of their long summer stretch of races. Round #4 was next for their second visit to Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario as part of their military appreciation night. The TQ midgets tackled the high banked 1/3 mile oval as the Can-Am Midget Wagner Transcription night. Thank you to the Wagner’s for their support for round #4!
Heat race #1 presented by HMCW Chassis took to the track with the #5 car of Andrew Whelan taking the green flag with local driver, Jeff Blackburn in the #7 car alongside him. Jeff with a quick car would prevail around the high side and take heat #1. Heat race #2 had some excitement with the #11 car of David Miller on the front row with Jody Bound (05). The 2022 series champion would make it 4 wide on the start sailing on the outside to take the lead very early. The amazing looking #42 car of Daniel Hawn would keep Whittam honest though, with a very close battle for the win. It would be Whittam visiting HMCW Chassis victory lane.
Normally, the two heat races set the field for the feature event. Which, it did. But, with the support of Larry’s Small Engines out of Orangeville, Ontario, we would have a Dash for Cash race with the bottom 2 of each heat races. These racers were not racing for points. Just some cold, hard CASH! This race saw Bound on the front row with Bob Bailey (15) on his outside. Close, tight racing seen would see the #74x of Sherry Hogan pick up the checkered flag and take home some cash. Thank you Larry and Larry’s Small Engines for the sponsorship for this race!
The Can-Am Midgets were the first feature event of the evening after a brief intermission. Miller and Whelan would lead the field to green. Tight racing from end to end of the field for a few laps before Whelan got spun going into turn #1 by Blackburn. This would take Whelan up the track with Hawn hitting the 5 car sending Hawn hard into the wall. This would end both drivers’ nights despite the effort of the Hawn crew to help get Whelan back on track. This incident sent the #7 car to the rear of the field. The restart saw the #57 car of James Stanley take the lead. With cars spreading out, Stanley would blast out close to a straightaway lead. Thinking this one would all be the 57 car’s race, Blackburn powered through the field and caught Stanley for the lead. Jeff would take the lead and eventually the checkered flag to claim his second feature win of the 2023 season. Stanley and Whittam joined him on the podium for interviews for the fans. Miller, and Tyler Sagan (20) rounded out the top 5.
The Qwick Wick Can-Am Midgets presented by Miller Office Trailers would like to thank Wagner Transcription along with Larry’s Small Engines of Orangeville for their support on race night! The TQ midgets continue their stretch of races this Saturday with their annual visit to Peterborough Speedway in Cavan, Ontario.
