The Qwick Wick Can-Am Midgets presented by Miller Office Trailers were back in action this past Saturday after a week off. They made their return to Full Throttle Motor Speedway at Varney in Durham, Ontario. This was the return for the midgets after a year hiatus from the track.

The drivers, crews, and officials rolled into the 1/4 mile high banked bullring early to prep their cars. After some practice to get their bearings on the track, heat races rolled up as the first series of the night. Heat race #1 saw James Stanley in the #57 car take the checkered flag, while Darren McLennan made his return to victory lane in heat race #2.

The feature race saw Jaden Riddell (13) and Mike Westwood (91) on the front row to do battle for 25 laps. Side by side on the start until Riddell took the lead into turn 3 on lap 1. Close one on the front straightaway with McLennan tagging the wall with the right rear suspension. He was able to battle the car the rest of the race. The first caution of the race came out with Westwood hitting the treacherous turn 4 wall. This had major damage and unfortunately, ending the night for the #91 car. The restart had everyone on their feet when Riddell was the control car, but got loose coming to the flag and almost taking out the field. Jaden was able to save the car, but losing many places. This handed the lead to the 2023 series champion, Daniel Hawn (42). The field calmed down a little bit, and ran single file from the front of the pack to the rear. With the top 6 nose to tail, lap traffic started coming apparent. Slicing and dicing to get around the traffic, Paul Jorgensen (68) spun out in turn 1. The restart saw Hawn stay in the lead. With all the efforts and Stanley on the tail tank taking the white flag, it wasn’t enough to get by the quick #42. Hawn claimed his first victory of the season with Stanley, and Jeff Blackburn (7) on the podium. Dominique Smith (49) and McLennan round out the top 5.

Riddell, Cory Whittam (55), Jorgensen, Tyler Cullen (43), Sherri Hogan (74x), Richard Woodlan (84), Larry Lawson (08), and Andrew Whelan (5) rounded out the finishing order.

The Can-Am Midgets return to Flamboro Speedway this Saturday, June 8th. With a rainout on opening night, we hope to get back on the 1/3 mile oval. Pit notes to be released this week.
