The Qwick Wick Can-Am Midgets presented by Miller Office Trailers were back in action this past Saturday night after a week off from the track. 14 teams rolled into Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario to do battle on the high banks.
HMCW Chassis heat race 1 saw Jr Farrelly (72) and Andrew Whelan (5) lead the field to green with local driver Jeff Blackburn in the #7 car taking victory. Heat race 2 had David Miller (11) and Jody Bound (05) start on the front row with your point leader, Cory Whittam (55) visiting HMCW Chassis victory lane. There was a fan appreciation with a special event going on at the track. That got some exposure for our drivers to meet the fans, and sign some autographs on track. Paul Jorgensen (68) took home some cold, hard cash with a win in the Dash for Cash race brought to you by Larry’s Small Engines of Orangeville.
The feature race was up next. The front row was deja-vu with Farrelly and Whelan leading the pack to the green flag just as they did in heat race 1. Side by side through the field for position didn’t last long with a caution on lap 1 for the #48 and #20 cars spinning. Both able to re join the field. Restart saw Farrelly to the lead with the heavy hitters coming through the field to the front. Caution flew on lap 4 with Miller, Bound and Sagan coming together. The restart saw the top 4 in the point standings creeping their way to the front. Caution flew on lap 8 for the #05 and #20 spinning again. The last caution flew on lap 10 with Sherri Hogan (74x) and #48 spinning. All were able to restart. Daniel Hawn in the #42 car soared to the lead on the restart and the rest of the race went green to checkered with Hawn claiming his second win in a row on the tour. James Stanley (57) finishes second with Blackburn third. Whittam, Whelan, Farrelly, Miller, Hogan, Bound, Mike Westwood (91), Bob Bailey (15), Rick Woodland (48), Sagan, and Jorgensen rounded out the finishing order.
The TQ Midgets are back at it next Saturday night, August 26th at Flamboro Speedway. There are only 3 races left in the 2023 season. Only a few more chances to see the midgets live before the season is over.
