With the summer just around the corner, that brings heat around. Both on the track and off the track. Beautiful weather for day #1 of Spring Velocity for Sunset Speedway along with the first race for the Qwick Wick Can-Am Midgets presented by Miller Office Trailers. There were a total of 15 cars that rolled into the high banked track in Innisfil, Ontario after a rain out for race #1 just a week ago. The TQ midgets were among the modifieds to support the APC United Late Model Series for their season opener as well.

There was action all day long with a single car spin out in practice, followed by the #05 flipping in practice not long after that. The action did not stop either when it came to the official race time. Heat #1 rolled out onto the track with a spin coming to the green flag from Sherri Hogan in the #74 car collecting the #11 car of David Miller putting him hard into the inside wall. This would end both their heat race. Larry Lawson (08) and Darren McLennan (78) were involved as well, but were able to continue. 2022 club champion Cory Whittam (55) took the checkered flag for heat race #1.

Heat race #2 was a lot calmer in a sense of no accidents. Fast paced racing brought the race to go green to checkered with 2021 champion of Jeff Blackburn (7) parking in victory lane. Those cars involved in the accidents and those who finished to get a good starting position, had a very small turn around to fix or make adjustments to their cars. Miller would not make the call with too much damage to his car, and Hogan was able to take the green flag, but would pull off very early.

Paul Jorgensen (68) and Mike Westwood (91) led the field to the first feature race green flag of the 2024 season. With Sunset Speedway being as wide as it is, there was lots of maneuvers to make your way to the front quickly. It wasn’t until lap 5 when Robert Polillo Jr (53) spun out, bringing out the caution. As they say, caution breed cautions, when just 2 laps later, Westwood would spin out on his own bringing out the next caution flag on lap 7. Both cars were able to restart with the field. The pack calmed down a little bit, with some racing laps. Jody Bound (05) would pull off on lap 10 with issues from his earlier flip in practice. Jaden Riddell in the #13 car would spin out on lap 15, collecting Pollilo Jr and ending both their days. With the restart on lap 15, leader, Blackburn was pulling away from the pack. Dicing for position behind them, clean racing throughout the field would have the rest of the race go green and claiming the first checkered flag of the season, Jeff Blackburn and the #7 car. Whittam and McLennan parked it on the front stretch and joined Jeff on the podium. James Stanley (57), and Daniel Hawn (42) would round out the top 5.

The Qwick Wick Can-Am Midgets have a week off with the next race set on June 1st. The TQ midgets are set to make their return to Full Throttle Motor Speedway at Varney in Durham, Ontario.
