Race Recap - June 16th, 2007
LUCAS OIL CAN AM TQ MIDGETS TODD CRESSWELL TAKES
After a last lap pass Todd Cresswell captured the feature race in the Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets first stop to Peterborough Speedway in the 2007 season. In the 4th race of the season, veteran racer Todd Creswell in the #3 machine proved he still has what it takes to win feature races. After driver introductions were complete, Stefan Haas, in the #1 Roger Riberdy machine, would pace the 18 car field to the green flag. Haas took the lead from the outside pole sitter Larry Wilson in the #5. Haas would continue to lead for 3 laps when a battle for the lead between Haas and Tyler Mackereth in the #40 would see Mackereth spin between turns 3 and 4 and Haas tap him. Haas broke a brake line which would see the end to the pole sitters night. Mackereth returned to the pits and his crew worked to get him back on the track but his pit stop would force him to start at the rear of the field. On the restart the #23 of Randy May would take the lead, the restart also saw James Gray in the #82 car fade from 6th place to almost the back of the field. Lap 5 saw May continue to lead followed by Wilson, Greg Smulders in the #00, Craig Mackereth in the #43 and last week's winner Lucas Smith in the #94 round out the top 5. Lap 7 saw eventual race winner Cresswell moving up through the field and coming on strong. After 13 circuits May continued to lead with Lucas Smith now 2nd, followed by Smulders, Cresswell, and Craig Mackereth. Lap 15 saw Lucas Smith closing in fast on the race leader, and Gray in the #82 machine who faded back early had now moved his National Exhaust sponsored machine up to the 6th position. The next caution of the night would come on lap 22 for a blown engine in the #17 car of Mike Hooper. Once the crew cleaned up the oil trail on the track it was back to a 3 lap shoot out. The green dropped which saw May retain his lead, but Cresswell had to made a brilliant pass on Lucas Smith and now found himself in the runner up position. As the white flag waved Cresswell proved the force he is and made an extraordinary pass on leader May to take the lead and the win. After the race was over Lucas Smith would see a 2 spot penalty for jumping the start pushing the points leader to the 5th finishing spot. The Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets will continue their 2007 campaign June 23rd at newly reconstructed Grand Bend Speedway. Race Results: 1. #3 Todd Cresswell 2. #23 Randy
