Race Recap - May 31st, 2003. TQ-Talk - By Dan Balych The Castrol TQs made their way through the inclement weather to JP’s House of Speed (Peterborough Speedway). It was a little rainy but racers don’t give in to Mother Nature although nuisance moisture did cause a one hour delay for our heat races. Other classes were able to race but the TQs are much too powerful and run on slick tires to chance running on less that totally dry conditions. Heat 1 Randy May, not totally happy with his new car went to the old reliable car and lead from flag to flag. James Gray who welcomed the delay due to getting in the wall with an axle that broke in practice, spun on the lap to the green (no damage) and Paul Smith #28, spun on the first corner, hit the concrete, and broke a shock mount. Kenny Lorenz went from 4th to 2nd on the first lap. Dave McIntosh #90, and James Gray #82 were glued to the #74’s rear bumper. Craig Mackereth #43, did not start due to an oil leak, FINISH: 23, 74, 90, 82, 20, 27, 49, 28, 43 Heat 2 The second heat went from green to checker. David Balych #12, started 3rd but by the 2nd lap he was 1st. Colin Turnbull #1, got caught in traffic and was at the back early. Jeff Riberdy #6, was 2nd on lap 3 with Creswell #3, third. By lap 6 Colin was third. He got by Jeff on lap 7 and having clawed is way through he pack was not going to settle for second. On the last lap, corner 3 he put a move on Balych and came home the winner. FINISH: 1, 12, 6, 3, 66, 55, 59, 69 B Main Curtis Nichols #55, started on pole and raced with Craig Mackereth #43 until lap 3 when #43 took over. Curtis and Craig ran together to the end. Blair McCann #27, Chris Ralph #59, and Earl Caine #69, had a real duel for position. A big blanket could have covered all three cars. FINISH: 43, 55, 59, 27, 69, 49 DNS 28 A Main Randy May started on pole and again the back-up car shone brightly. Balych #12, and Lorenz #74, and Riberdy #6, raced together not noticing car #90 of Dave McIntosh, who started 6th, until it was too late. 74 passed 12, 12 passed 74 but McIntosh passed them both. On lap 10 Colin Turnbull who had raced to 3rd spot lost a coolant line going into corner 1 which made an exciting ride for Balych who got into his water and headed for the wall in turn 2 but fortunately he was able to save it somehow. Todd Cresswell #3 had the back come around in the same turn and hit an inside curb and couldn’t continue. After the restart McIntosh hounded May and almost caught him on lap 20. Craig Mackereth soldiered up to 4th after starting 10th. Lorenz rounded out the top 5. It was Randy’s 5th feature win in 13 years.
