Race Recap - May 18th, 2003.

TQ-Talk - By Dan Balych

Stroud, OntarioSunday of the holiday weekend found the Castrol Can-Am Midgets traveling speed show at Sunset Speedway.  As you approach the pit area, the new ownership of the track starts to show with the first improvement being the pit road.  It’s now lined with limestone gravel to keep the dust down.  Also, the entrance to the racing surface will soon be in turn 3, allowing better and safer staging of the races.  Old faces, new faces, this place is running like a well oiled TQ despite the ownership change.

Heat 1

Adam Walsh, due to his DNF on Saturday, started on the pole and led from green to checkers.  Paul Smith’s #28 started 5th but rocketed to 2nd in only 3 laps.  Colin Turnbull, who began 6th, drove to 4th on the next lap.  Smith knocked on the door on the inside of Walsh for many laps but Adam was unbeatable.  Craig Mackereth came in third for another solid heat finish in as many nights.

Finish: Walsh, Smith, Mackereth, Turnbull, Todd Cresswell, Dan May and James Treadwell

Heat 2

Chris Ralph started on the pole but Jeff Riberdy’s #6 accelerated to first place with the #12 of David Balych who started 6th right on his tail.  The 82 of James Gray was running 3rd and made fast work of the misfiring #12 to race Riberdy for the lead on lap 3.  On lap 4, Gray and Riberdy got together with Gray unable to continue and Jeff restarting at the rear.  Dave McIntosh in the #90 assumed the lead on the restart ahead of Balych.  Curtis Nichols had a good run and finish 3rd behind McIntosh and Balych.

Finish: McIntosh, Balych, Nichols, Randy May, Riberdy, Earl Caine and Stefan Haas.  Gray (DQ)

B Feature

Dan May ran away with the B with James Treadwell in the #66 2nd.  Chris Ralph ran well to finish 3rd.

Finish: D. May, Treadwell, Ralph, Haas, Caine, Dan Smith.

A Main

Randy May went to the old car for the Feature but it wouldn’t run properly and he pulled off before the green flag waved.  After not finishing Saturday, Adam had a run that was pure Walsh, gone, period.  The race ran green to checkered in 5 minutes.  Craig Mackereth had another strong run finishing 2nd just ahead of Riberdy.  Paul Smith and Dave McIntosh rounded out the top five.  Gray’s 6th in the feature was enough to keep the points lead after 2 of 15 races.

Walsh the winner and driver of the 49 car, is off to Vancouver to work and will not be back racing until the Canada Day long weekend in June at Sauble Beach.  He is a class act and will miss him in the pits.  However, his uncle will be running the car for the remainder of the races.

Finish: Walsh, Mackereth, Riberdy, P. Smith, McIntosh, Gray, Turnbull, D. May, Cresswell, Nichols, Balych, Treadwell, Ralph, Haas, Caine and D. Smith.
