Race Recap - May 17th, 2003.

TQ-Talk - By Dan Balych

Peterborough - On Saturday May 17th, the Castrol Can-Am Midgets rolled into “JP’s House of Speed”, Peterborough Speedway.  The weather was sunny but a little cool at night.  JP had a great car count and the stands housed a decent sized crowd.

In heat 1 Todd Cresswell #3 who started 4th , got a great start and led into the first corner.   Colin Turnbull had his hands full with James Gray in the #82 and was unable to challenge Cresswell who led start to finish.

Finish: Cresswell, Turnbull, Gray, Curtis Nichols, Adam Walsh, Randy May, Stefan Haas, Ken Lorenz and Blair McCann

For heat 2, James Treadwell started on pole but couldn’t hold back the hard charging Craig Mackereth from taking the lead.  On lap 3, Bart Adams joined the “upside-down club” flipping his car as he came out of turn 2.  Bart walked away uninjured but the car was damaged and both the car and the driver sat out the rest of the night.  It took until lap 5 for Jeff Riberdy to get to 2nd place but by that time, Craig was a straightaway ahead.  Dave McIntosh got a solid 3rd with Paul Smith passing David Balych for 4th.

Finish: Mackereth, Riberdy, McIntosh, Smith, Balych, Treadwell, Earl Caine, Chris Ralph and Bart Adams.

B Feature

Randy May’s #23 usually doesn’t run the B but has a new car that is being sorted out.  He started from the pole and led all laps for the win.  Treadwell and Stefan Haas had a great race for second with Ken Lorenz right there as well.

Finish: May, Haas, Lorenz, Treadwell, McCann, Ralph, Caine

A Main

Pole Position on the traditional 4-wide salute to the crowd was left empty for our fellow racer Kelliegh Lang who passed away recently.  Todd Cresswell started from pole and had a decent cushion on 2nd place Craig Mackereth who in turn had Gray nipping at his heels.  On lap 10, Adam Walsh, last year’s champion, dropped out with car problems which is rare for the #49 car.  On lap 17 of 20, Cresswell had his lead disappear when Mackereth spun in corner 2.  On the restart, Gray motored past Cresswell to register his 3rd career feature win.  Curtis Nichols’ #55 had a career best 3rd place finish just ahead of Colin Turnbull who drove a masterful race.  David Balych, who has a gorilla on his back for the last 2 seasons, finished 5th.

Finish: Gray, Cresswell, Nichols, Turnbull, Balych, May, McIntosh, Smith, Riberdy, Mackereth, Lorenz, Haas, McCann, Treadwell, Ralph and Walsh.
