Race Recap - June 28/29, 2003.

                        TQ Talk - June 28, 2003

The first long weekend of the summer found the Castrol Can-Am Midgets moseying up to one of the best tracks we run on. It is also the most fun and results in the least amount of sleep for most competitors and their families due to all the bench racing afterwards around the campfires…Sauble Speedway.

When all the sand settled there was a new sheriff in town. Colin Turnbull who had experienced three weeks of problems during feature races while Jeff Riberdy raced away with back to back feature wins, took the two features at the Beach in a decisive fashion.

Heat 1

Stefan Haas, last year’s rookie of the year, lead from the pole 'til lap 4 when Curtis Nichols' #55, got by. Jeff Riberdy #6, came from 10th to 6th by lap 5. Adam Walsh who came in from Vancouver worked his way up from 9th to 2nd by lap 9. On the last lap in corner 3 Adam took the lead to win the heat. Dave McIntosh started 7th and finished third after many problems during practice.

FINISH: Walsh, Nichols, McIntosh, Riberdy, Haas, Cresswell, Friesen, Ralph, Zitzka, M McCann, D Smith

Heat 2

Colin Turnbull started up front and went on to win but James Gray #82, sniffed his tailpipe all race almost getting by on corner three of the last lap. Ken Lorenz #74 came from 6th to finish 3rd. Paul Smith, again making that new motor smoke finished 5th.

FINISH:

Turnbull, Gray, Lorenz, R May, P Smith, D May, Balych, Mackereth, Treadwell, Caine.

B Main

The B Main was run Sunday, the first race on the card due to … you are not going to believe this…rain, ending the show about 9 PM on Saturday. James Friesen #52 started pole and ran into a severe loose condition coming out allowing Craig Mackereth to advance to the lead on lap 3.  Balych got to 2nd on lap 4.  Caution came out on lap 7 for Chris Ralph #59. After the caution James Treadwell #66, got past Friesen on lap 9.  Friesen had his hands full and didn’t crash as he came out of the corner sideways. Quite a ride!

FINISH: Mackereth, Balych, Treadwell, B McCann, Ryan Zitzka, Friesen, Caine, Ralph, D Smith

A Feature

Colin Turnbull #1, starting 2nd got the lead on lap 1 and never looked back. Ken Lorenz went from 6th to  2nd, also on the first lap. Lap 7 found Dave Macintosh #90 turned around. On Lap 8, Randy May and Adam Walsh #49 got friendly and Randy left with a flat tire. James Gray had a good run finishing 3rd. On Lap 17 Paul Smith got to 2nd from 9th.

FINISH: Turnbull, Lorenz, P. Smith, McIntosh, D. May, Mackereth, Walsh, Balych, Treadwell, Cresswell, Friesen, Haas, Gray, B. McCann, Zitzka, Caine, Chris Ralph, R. May, Nichols, Riberdy, D. Smith

TQ Talk - June 29, 2003

This was the mid-season championship race sponsored by Gerard Daniel Worldwide,  suppliers of wire mesh and related products. Bill Crooks the Canadian CEO of Gerard Daniel,  former owner of Crooks Wire Products and the sponsor for many years of the Balych “Say No to Drugs” car has supported David and the club for 14 years.

Heat 1

Chris Ralph ran from the pole only to lose the lead on lap 2 to Adam Walsh who came from 6th. James Gray #82 caught a break when Chris went wide on lap 5, and got to 2nd. However by lap 6 Craig Mackereth was 2nd motoring all the way from 8th.

FINISH: Walsh, Mackereth, Gray, Riberdy, Ralph, Zitzka, D May, Cresswell, Dan Smith.

Heat 2

David Balych driving the 20 car started pole. James Friesen who started 4th was in position 1 after one lap. Caution came out when Earl Caine #69 had help going around turn 3.  Ken Lorenz, coming through the pack got a piece of Balych’s rear wheel and proved once more that TQ Midgets make lousy airplanes. Ken hit the wall and catch fence, which had just been repaired by track owner Joe Chisholm and race director Ross Potter the previous Friday.  Kudos to their fence mending skills.  That must be a bad spot as a car last week had taken out 150 feet of the fence.  Ken hit so hard he knocked out a chunk of concrete.  Now Joe and Ross can show us their concrete mixing ability!  These people are dedicated keeping the racers at their track safe.  Ken was dazed and sore but was able to walk away due to the  Midget’s very strict chassis rule pertaining to safety issues.  On lap 3 Turnbull took the lead. Dave McIntosh finished 2nd.

FINISH: Turnbull, McIntosh, R. May, P. Smith, Friesen, Balych, Treadwell, Caine, McCann, Dan Smith

B Main

Dan May had control of the B Main right from the start. Todd Cresswell had a bad push that he chased all night and could not get rid of. He finally went out with a sticking throttle cable.

FINISH:  D May, Treadwell, B McCann, Caine.

A Main

The A started at 11:55 PM after 32 races  had run because of Saturday’s rain shortened program. Colin Turnbull who started 3rd was in the lead by lap 1. On  lap 4 there was a 10 car crash.  Randy May, Dave McIntosh, James Friesen, Ryan Zitzka, Jeff Riberdy, and Dan May could not continue.  Paul Smith repaired his car in the pits and was able to run a few laps before retiring  from the race.

On the way to the green, Chris Ralph joined the upside down club in turn 4 and Curtis Nichols #55 damaged a wheel. From then on it was green to checker.

Turnbull ran away for the win. Cresswell still with a bad push wrestled the wheel to 2nd spot and Mackereth who had been in the 10 car pile-up finished 3rd. Earl Caine had his best finish ever with an 8th.

FINISH: Turnbull, Cresswell, Mackereth, Gray, Walsh, Balych, Treadwell, Caine, McCann, Dan Smith, Paul Smith, James Friesen, Dave McIntosh, Jeff Riberdy, Randy May, Dan May, Chris Ralph, Ryan Zitzka and Curtis Nichols.  Ken Lorenz who did not start the feature had his first DNS in 18 years.
