Race Recap - June 21st, 2003.

TQ Talk - By Dan Balych

June 21st saw the Castrol Can Am Midgets at Sunset Speedway at Highway 89 and Highway 11.

The night was like the movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The good was that we gained three cars from the Perry Speedway near Buffalo because of rain there. Imagine that, rain! The bad was that we had 3 engines let go in practice and 2 during the race and the ugly was that those cars don't usually do that.  We also had two rookie drivers Michael McCann #27 and Tyler Mackereth #40.

Heat 1

Earl Caine and Todd Cresswell started on pole and off pole respectively.  On Lap 1 Cresswell, #3 fought for the lead on the inside but Caine re-took the lead and lead for 4 laps, looking very strong. Dave McIntosh pulled into 2nd on lap 2. As the laps rolled off Caine #69 got loose .  Riberdy #6, who started 6th got by all racers by lap 5. Dave Macintosh #90, and Ken Lorenz # 74 battled for second as Riberdy drove away.

FINISH: Riberdy, McIntosh, Lorenz, Treadwell, Walsh , Cresswell, Caine

Heat 2

Heat 2 showcased the different motors in our club.
Curtis Friesen #51 in an oil cooled Suzuki motor, David Balych #12 and JJ Johnstone #7 in stock water cooled Kawis and Chris Ralph in a water cooled Suzuki and Mackereth in the modified water cooled Kawi represented the various types of motors in the club.  Balych, who lost an engine in practice was given Stefan Haas' #20 to run.  Balych ran first for 4 laps until he slipped up a bit in corner 2 allowing Craig Mackereth to get by.  JJ Johnson #7 finished in 2nd place, followed by Curtis Friesen then Balych.
Tyler Mackereth ran his uncle Andy Mackereth's car.

FINISH: Craig Mackereth, JJ Johnstone, Curtis Friesen, Balych, Ralph, Tyler Mackereth.

Heat 3

Randy May continued his winning ways by leading all the laps of the third heat. Paul Smith #28 in a new generation motor was close at first but Randy stretched out a good lead. James Gray #82, after a wreck last week had engine gremlins and went out early. Paul Smith and James Friesen #52, battled to the end. Michael McCann drove his first race as
a full driver. He is trying to wrestle the steering wheel away from his
dad, Blair.

FINISH: May, P Smith, Curtis Nichols, James Friesen, Turnbull, McCann, J
Gray.

B Main

On the 1st lap Cresswell was tagged by Caine and Cresswell spun taking Tyler Mackereth with him. Tyler had suspension damage but continued to
chase Blair McCann relentlessly until the checkered flag. He had a great run despite the damage. This kid is awesome.

FINISH: McCann, Mackereth, Neal Cox, Caine, Cresswell

Feature

At the start Randy May #23 went right to the front as per usual. Jeff Riberdy #6 had a different idea as he did last week at Flamboro.  Riberdy was up to second by lap 9 when a caution came out as Friesen slowed in corner 4. Paul Smith was also on a tear. James Gray had to leave because of a sick power plant. May was not able to stop the Riberdy tide and succumbed to him.  On lap 20, Ralph #59, lost his engine bringing out the yellow. By this time Paul Smith #28 had made it to 3rd place. On lap 24 Friesen #51 lost his engine.  Riberdy took another checkered flag. It appears the only way to stop Riberdy is to have him start at another race track!

FINISH: Riberdy, May. P Smith, Craig Mackereth, McIntosh, Lorenz, Johnstone, Cresswell, Walsh, Treadwell, Friesen, Balych, Tyler Mackereth, Blair McCann, Caine, Cox, Ralph, James Friese3n, Gray, Turnbull
