Race Recap - July 26th, 2003. by Dan Balych Saturday July 26 was another race night/rain delay adventure. The pit stewards at JP’s House of Speed guaranteed us that the light rain would stop by 6PM and it did. I would not have bet money on it! James Gray who is barely of drinking age had a 24 last night. 24 meaning 2 wins for 2 tries. James was the car to beat! Ken Lorenz who ran 18 years before missing a feature, a remarkable feat indeed, was back after an ugly crash at Sauble Beach. Graham Kells, a former car owner was there to purchase a car, adding to our race car count. Heat 1 James Gray who started third was leading by lap 1. Jeff Riberdy, Todd Cresswell and Craig Mackereth advanced through the field but James was gone. FINISH: Grey, Riberdy, Cresswell, Mackereth, Balych, Walsh, Caine, Dan Smith, Michael McCann Heat 2 Randy May came from third to first on lap 1 then he left everyone else in his dust again driving his old car because the new one has not yet been repaired after his Sauble Beach crash. Ken Lorenz, driving hurt, earned 2nd by lap 3, after starting 4th. Dave McIntosh got by Lorenz to finish 2nd. Ken Lorenz finished third, Curtis Nichols 4th and James Treadwell 5th. FINISH: R May, McIntosh, Lorenz, Nichols, Treadwell, Turnbull, Haas, P Smith B Feature Earl Caine, who usually arrives at the track by himself or with only his daughter to crew for him won the B for the 2nd time in his career. He lead from green to checker. Stefan Haas and Paul Smith tried everything they could to pass him on the last two laps but they were unsuccessful. When coming into the pits Earl got the ole Dale Earnhardt welcome from the crews. A Feature Curtis Nichols started on pole with Randy May beside him. By lap 1 Randy disposed of Nichols. It looked like he would repeat his Heat 1 romp. Ahh but James Gray, the other heat winner had other thoughts. Gray was 2nd after 2 laps and the chase was on. Jeff Riberdy who started 6th took over third on lap 6. Lap 8 saw James Gray pass Randy May for the lead. Also coming was Harry Walsh who came up 4th to 9th. On Lap 19 a car spun to bring out the caution and another caution came out when Balych lost a motor on lap 22. Gray went on to win. Todd Cresswell came from 11th to finish 5th, McIntosh from 8th to 4th. FINISH: Gray, R May, Riberdy, McIntosh, Cresswell, Lorenz, Nichols, Turnbull, Walsh, Treadwell, C Mackereth, B McCann, Caine, Haas, P Smith, Balych, D Smith Archives |
