It was a gorgeous day for racing Saturday night at Full Throttle Motor Speedway @ Varney. Thirteen cars including 2 American drivers (Pat Smith and Andy Jankowiak) were set to do battle, double features once again being on the card.

The first race saw Luc Munsie #26 and Ryan Fraser #94 make up the front row, as they led the drivers to a three wide salute before starting the 25 lap feature event.

Fraser jumped out to the early lead and held on to it, until a fierce Darren Dryden in car #12 took the lead on lap 12. The race went caution free without incident with Dryden taking his 3rd feature win of the season and extended his points lead. Ryan Fraser finished 2nd and Steve Murdock rounded out the top 3.

An autograph session between features took place, and fans were treated to autograph cards, t-shirts and even posters of some of their favourite drivers. We’d like to thank all of the fans for their continued support of the Can-Am Midgets and local short track racing!

After all the fans got back to their seats it was time to do battle for the second feature race of the night and it was nothing short of exciting!

David Miller #11 started on the pole (meeting the requirements of a rookie driver to be scored in the regular handicapping procedure) and started alongside Dominique Smith #49, bringing the pack of fire breathing rockets down to the green flag. Smith got a great start and jumped into the lead in turn one setting a blistering pace, as Miller followed in her tire tracks until lap 13, when Brandon Hauck #53 slipped in front of him to take over the 2nd position, with Andy Jankowiak who followed him through to take over the 3rd position. On lap 17 Jankowiak dove under Hauck in turn three to move into 2nd place with his sights set on the leader with just 8 laps to go. One of the most exciting, but scary moments of the night came when Dominique Smith in an attempt to pass the lapped car of #46 Bob Bailey got crossed up and almost spun her car around, but managed to keep it straight with 6 laps to go, allowing the wicked fast #01 of Andy Jankowiak to dig into her sizeable lead. On the same lap, series points leader Darren Dryden moved into 3rd. With just two laps to go Jankowiak made his move diving under the #49 of Smith in turn three as he edged past at the start finish line. Jankowiak went on to win his first Can-Am Midget feature (the second caution free race of the night) in his first start at Full Throttle Motor Speedway @ Varney (in the TQ Midgets), Darren Dryden took 2nd in a hard fought battle for position on the last lap, with Smith rounding out the top 3 once again.

An excited Jankowiak did a polish victory lap waving the checkered flag to all the fans in attendance! “We won a can-am midget race tonight! I cannot believe it. I got my hand under the steering wheel to my wedge adjuster going down the front stretch and spun that thing as many times as I could before I needed my hand back. Crazy ten laps after that. The car finally sat on that right rear the way I needed it to without sliding to much and It was a new ball game. I picked them off one at a time. Took the lead with two to go and had to hold on for dear life at the end over the Dryden car that was charging hard at the end. Awesome day! I love that track! Thank you to Jimmy and Pat Smith. I have no idea how I got so lucky to have so many people doing all this just to help me race but its pretty cool! I know winning on the can-am tour means a lot to them just like it does me. Its cool when it all works out. Thank you to every person that helps make this all work. It takes so many contributions from so many different places to make this all happen. I’m so lucky to have everyone that I have and I am grateful for all of you.” – Jankowiak said about his first ever Can-Am Midget victory.

This track is hard enough to race without having and incidents, and it was a testamate to the drivers for keeping it clean and green! On a side note, both Darren Dryden (12.01 sec) and Andy Jankowiak (11.96 sec) set track records en route to their victories.

We’re off this weekend, but join us for the next race coming up at Sunset Speedway July 15th!
